Gary David or Mark Caguioa?

El Granada or The Spark? If you asked me the question just right before the Governors' Cup started, I can easily say "hands down Gary D." But as his team (Powerade) failed to enter playoffs for two straight conferences, his chances become unlikely. Why? because MVPs come from winning teams.

Let us remember what happened last year. Jimmy Alapag and Mark Caguioa were the top contenders for the PBA Season MVP. MC47 was better than the Mighty Mouse in statistical points but the former failed to translate those stellar performances to WINS. Alapag, on the other hand, won Finals MVP twice and that says it all.

Yes, Gary David produced huge numbers the whole season. Some fans even joked, "siya ba import ng Powerade?" His performance will go down in the history books for sure but it doesn't necessarily mean he takes home the highest award an individual player can receive. I'm sure everyone knows Kobe. He put up a beast-like-35ppg in the 05-06 season but Steve Nash won the MVP because of better team standings. Again, that says it all.

Right now, the hardware is for Mark Caguioa to lose. If he and the Brgy.Ginebra Gin Kings continue their surge in the semi finals and eventually enter the PBA Finals, there's no doubt in my mind everyone will vote for him. But even if the worst case happens, I still think he is the front runner for the MVP Award. How come? because he will win the BPC Award in the Governors' Cup. No one's near him right now. David, Washington, Santos and Taulava's teams are already out of contention which also eliminates their chance to win it. Meanwhile, Caguioa is just heating up after the Big J passed him the torch and is living up to the expectations.

That gives Mark 2 BPC Awards. And that says it all.
